We were asked to take a dark basement apartment and create a light-filled space by making access to the private garden which was previously limited by a small back door and steep concrete steps up to the garden. We excavated from the back windows and by using beautiful light-wood sleepers, we designed a fabulous stairway to the sunny garden and also built a fun and functional garden structure for use as a storage or seating area but also to block off an unsightly and unused neighbour's garden.
Inside the apartment, we transformed the space and added an extra bedroom & study area. It was important to open up the property in order to make the apartment feel spacious and airy. We moved walls & installed double doors to open up the space. At the same time, we moved the front door to create a new hallway and added a contemporary open-plan kitchen with open shelving and all less than five minutes walk from Twickenham town centre and mainline station.
